What we can help with

Most calls we get are for the everyday things that go wrong in a house: a drip that has turned into a puddle, a toilet that will not stop running, a sink that will not drain. Pick the job below to read how we handle it, or just ring and describe it.

Emergency plumber

Burst pipes, water through ceilings and overflowing toilets, any hour of the day or night.

Blocked drains

Sinks, baths, toilets, gullies and outside drains that are slow, smelly or backing up.

Leak repair

Finding where the water is coming from and fixing it, from a weeping joint to a split pipe.

Taps and toilets

Dripping taps, running cisterns, weak flushes, new taps and replacement toilets.

Pipework

Repairs, rerouting and replacement of copper and plastic pipes, stop taps and valves.

Radiators and heating

Cold radiators, leaking valves, bleeding, balancing and system pressure. No gas work.

Appliance plumbing

Water and waste connections for washing machines, dishwashers and fridges with water feeds.

Bathroom plumbing

Showers, basins, baths and toilets fitted, moved or repaired.

Kitchen plumbing

Sinks, taps, waste traps and appliance connections when you are updating a kitchen.

How we quote

Every job starts with a conversation. When you call, we ask what you can see and hear: where the water is, how fast it is coming, what has changed and how old the fitting is. From that we can usually tell you the likely fix and give you a free quote over the phone.

If something turns out to be different once we are on site, we tell you before doing anything extra and you decide whether we go ahead. We do not publish prices on this website because two jobs that sound the same can need very different work, and a guessed price helps nobody.

What happens when you call

  1. You describe the problem. Tell us what is happening and where you are. If water is escaping, we will talk you through stopping it first.
  2. We give you a free quote. We explain what we think is wrong and what fixing it involves.
  3. We agree a time. For an emergency that means as soon as we can get to you. For everything else, a time that suits you.
  4. We fix it and explain what we did. If we spot anything else worth knowing about, we mention it rather than quietly adding it to the bill.

Local homes and plumbing

Soundwell sits between Kingswood and Staple Hill on the eastern side of Bristol, in South Gloucestershire. It grew as a coal-mining community and was later known for boot and shoe making, and plenty of the housing round here has been standing a long time. Staple Hill, just to the north, is largely Victorian.

Older houses bring their own plumbing quirks. Homes built before the 1970s can still have lead pipework somewhere between the pavement and the kitchen tap. Fittings added over the decades do not always match, and stop taps that have not been touched in years can seize. None of that is a reason to worry, but it is worth knowing when something goes wrong.

Water here is supplied by Bristol Water, which is now part of South West Water, and Wessex Water looks after the sewers. The supply is described as moderately hard to very hard, so limescale on taps, shower heads and toilet valves is a common reason things stop working properly.

Know where your stop tap is

The most useful thing you can do before a plumbing emergency is find your internal stop tap. In most houses it is under the kitchen sink, where the mains pipe comes up through the floor. In some older houses it is in a hallway cupboard, under the stairs or in a cellar.

  • Turn it clockwise to shut off the water. If it is stiff, do not force it with a wrench, as old stop taps can snap.
  • Close it and open it again once a year so it does not seize.
  • There is usually a second stop tap outside, under a small cover in the pavement. That one belongs to the water company, so leave it alone unless you have no other option.

If you cannot find yours or it will not turn, give us a call. Fitting a new stop tap is a straightforward job and much better done before you need it.

Quick checks before you call

Some problems have a simple cause. These are worth a minute of your time:

  • No water at all? Check whether your neighbours have water. If they do not, it is likely a supply problem, and Bristol Water posts supply issues on its website.
  • One slow sink? Hair and grease in the trap are the usual culprits. If every drain in the house is slow, the blockage is further down the line.
  • Toilet keeps running? Lift the cistern lid and see whether water is spilling into the overflow. That usually points to the fill valve.
  • Radiator cold at the top? It probably needs bleeding. If several are cold at the bottom, sludge may have built up.
  • Low pressure on one tap? Unscrew the aerator on the end and check it for limescale.

Common questions

Are you really open 24 hours?

Yes. You can call us at any time of day or night, including weekends and bank holidays.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. We give free quotes over the phone. If anything changes once we see the job, we talk to you before going further.

Do you work on gas boilers?

No. We do not work on gas appliances. For a gas boiler, cooker or fire, use a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Can you help with radiators?

Yes. We handle the water side of heating: radiators, valves, pipework, bleeding and topping up system pressure.

Is the drain outside my house mine or the water company’s?

It depends. Since October 2011, shared sewers and drains outside your property boundary have generally been the responsibility of the sewerage company, which here is Wessex Water. A drain that serves only your home and sits within your boundary is usually yours. We can help you work out which is which.
