Plumbing questions and answers

Straight answers to the questions we are asked most often by people in Soundwell and the surrounding areas.

Still not sure?

Are you open 24 hours?

Yes. We answer the phone and take emergency calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including bank holidays.

How do I get a quote?

Call us and describe the problem. We give free quotes over the phone and confirm the price before any work starts.

Why are there no prices on your website?

Plumbing jobs vary too much for a fixed price list to be fair. We would rather give you a free quote for your actual job.

Do you work on gas boilers or gas appliances?

No. For gas boilers, cookers, fires or gas pipes, use a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you smell gas, call 0800 111 999.

Do you do electrical work?

No. For electric showers and similar jobs, we do the water side and an electrician makes the electrical connection.

Where is my stop tap?

Usually under the kitchen sink, where the mains pipe comes up through the floor. In some older houses it is in a hallway cupboard, under the stairs or in a cellar.

Who is responsible for the pipe from the street?

Up to the stop tap in the pavement, the water company. From there into your home, the supply pipe is usually yours.

Who supplies water and sewerage in Soundwell?

Water is supplied by Bristol Water, now part of South West Water. Sewerage is handled by Wessex Water.

Who is responsible for a blocked drain?

A drain that serves only your home and sits within your boundary is usually yours. Since October 2011, shared sewers and drains outside your boundary have generally been the sewerage company’s responsibility.

Could my house have lead pipes?

Homes built before the 1970s could have lead pipework, most often in the supply pipe. We can replace the part that is yours.

Why is there limescale on my taps?

Water here is moderately hard to very hard, so limescale builds up on taps, shower heads and toilet valves over time.

Which areas do you cover?

Soundwell and about 10 miles around, including Staple Hill, Kingswood, Downend, Fishponds, Mangotsfield, Hanham and Warmley.
